Just from the past few days, it's clear to me that we have enough interest
to hold a BOF. I agree that the next step should be to try to determine
approximately what we think the scope of the proposed WG should be, and
come up with a specific list of work items -- in other words, work on a
proposed charter. Once we have a better idea of these things, we can ask
the security AD's for approval to hold a BOF in San Diego.

Approval for forming a working group and of the exact charter will be up to
the IESG, likely based on the results of the BOF. If a working group is
formed, the responsible Area Directors will select a chair (I'll be happy
to volunteer).

As noted above, please send followups to the new mailing list at
<ietf-kitten@grand.central.org>.

Does anyone actually object to having the BOF discussion here rather
than on a new list? I'd prefer to do so because this list already
presumably has all the people interested in GSSAPI. IF it is missing
people, it's probably just as easy to add them here as on a new list.

Why wouldn't an announcement to the old CAT WG list suffice? Presumably
all the people interested in the GSS-API who are also interested in
KITTEN would join the KITTEN list.

I suppose I'll be happy with a forum for KITTEN other than krbdev :)

_ I'd guess it mostly has their old email address, the addresses
of a lot of people not really interested and a random collection
of junk. It has gotten nothing but spam for the last 3 years.

_ True, but you'd need to publize that somewhere.

My apologies ahead of time for the cross-posting to multiple lists.

Following up on the recent discussions regarding GSSAPI v2 extensions
which have taken
place within the Global Grid Forum Security Working Group; on the IETF
CAT Working
Group mailing list; the IETF Kerberos Working Group mailing list; and
many Zephyr and
Jabber chat sessions, it appears to be time to form a working group as a
follow up to CAT
(aka KITTEN) to complete the necessary work.

Prior to sending a formal request to the IESG I would like to obtain
feedback from
the interested parties. I have posted to:

    /afs/athena.mit.edu/user/j/a/jaltman/Public/kitten-iesg-letter.html
    http://web.mit.edu/~jaltman/Public/kitten-iesg-letter.html

a proposed letter to the IESG providing the justification for the
creation of the KITTEN working group. This letter includes a
proposed charter as well as a set of milestones.

Please read the proposal letter and send feedback to
ietf-cat-wg@lists.stanford.edu.
Replies to this e-mail will be redirected to the CAT mailing list.

Thank you.

Jeffrey Altman

Jeff,
This look very good.

I know I have requested the GGF and IETF to review the situation of extensions
to GSSAPI, and I am sure many of the active GGF members (who also attend the
IETF) will participate in the BOF and join the new WG.

And thanks for volunteering to lead this effort.
