1.5.22 is the recommended production ready release of OpenAFS for
Microsoft Windows users. It supports all Microsoft Windows operating
systems from Windows 2000 through Windows Vista including both 32-bit
and 64-bit architectures. The 1.5.22 release continues the recent
efforts at optimizing the performance of the Windows client and
improving its scalability.
For UNIX, Linux, and MacOS X the recommend production ready release of
OpenAFS continues to be 1.4.4. The 1.5.22 Windows client is fully
compatible with all AFS server versions.

Significant changes since 1.5.21:
Microsoft Windows:
* The AFS Server Manager no longer crashes arbitrarily. (See update
to libadmin in all platforms.)
* Infinite recursion detection (up to 512 levels). If a recursion
is detected an "access denied" error is returned.
* Cached data that is known to be valid when the servers issuing
the callbacks go down will continue to be accessible from the
cache even after the associated callbacks expire. This prevents
applications executing out of the AFS cache from crashing when
the user disconnects from the network for long periods of time.
* Whenever possible, the AFS client will now perform local directory
updates in response to Create, Rename, and Delete operations.
This can avoid a significant percentage of directory reads from
the file server.
* Prevent a crash if the VLDB server list is empty while attempting
to evaluate a mount point.
* When storing the contents of dirty buffers to the file server,
only write the actual dirty bytes instead of the entire buffer.
* The default chunk size used for RPCs between the cache manager
and the file server has been increased to 1MB from 128KB.
All platforms:
* libadmin's use of ubik_Call(XXX,...) has been replaced by calls
to ubik_XXX(...). This avoids crashes on systems that use 64-bit
integer and pointer types.
* Update fileserver tracking of hosts with multiple IP addresses such
that hosts are not conflated as a result of incorrect advertised
addresses or IP address changes.
* Update fileserver alternate address probing to fill the list of
probes correctly in all cases.
* New man pages for vos, fs, afsd, bos subcommands.
* Per host thread quota now implemented in the fileserver.
* Support directoryless incremental dumps.
* Validate dump files before restoring with vos restore.
* Fileserver now asserts far less often, instead taking corrupt
volumes offline.
All unix platforms:
* Write MIT-compatible ticket files on 64 bit long platforms.
MacOS:
* Avoid potential panic for inodes without an fs reference.
Linux:
* Update md5-based inode number scheme code to work properly on 64 bit
hosts.
* Update system call table probing.
* pointer demangling for sparc32 implemented to fix lwp.
Solaris:
* xbsa library support updated.
* Kerberos 5 utilities (aklog and asetkey) now can build against
native Solaris kerberos.
AIX:
* krb5 aklog LAM plugin now included.
* Kerberos 5 utilities now can build against native AIX (NAS)
kerberos.
Known issues in the Windows client:
* Beta versions of the Network Identity Manager AFS plug-in must
be uninstalled prior to the installation of OpenAFS 1.5.22
* Windows Vista does not support the old WinHelp file format used
by afscreds.exe and afs_control.exe.
* On Windows Vista, afscreds.exe and afs_config.exe are not User
Account Control (UAC) compatible and must be "Run as
Administrator" in order to modify the AFS Client Configuration or
start/stop the AFS client service.
