I remember that being said of Linux 2.4 particularly, but not generally.

Realize that last year our code was essentially just IBM AFS. No
significant enhancements have been made to the memory cache *except* a fix
from Chas Williams which means using it on IRIX isn't likely to bite you
as it would have before; This change will be in the forthcoming 1.2.3
release.
