Why not use .backup volumes rather than .readonly volumes? Create them
with "vos backup" or "vos backupsys" rather than "vos release". Users
can mount the .backup volumes, too, in the home directories, so that
they can do 80% of the restorations themselves.
This keeps the data-to-be-backed-up in the non-central servers, but you
had to ship the data from non-central to central locations anyway. If
you do it with .readonly volumes, then "vos release" ships the data. If
you do it with .backup volumes, you do it when you dump these .backup
volumes.
