[OpenAFS] Authentication

I'm a little unsure about AFS' authentication.

Using debian - and precompiled packages from the OpenAFS site.
the modules get installed smoothly and the client as well.
(eg I get anonymous axx to several sites under /afs).

Now I want to take this a step further by having a couple of servers.

Do I really need the full kerberos setup? What does openafs-kpasswd 
provide? Couldn't I just use it?

What kind of configuration will I have to do afterwords?
