well, one machine here:

Linux studentloan 2.4.17 #1 Sat Dec 29 04:01:45 EST 2001 sparc unknown
$ cat /proc/cpuinfo
cpu             : Texas Instruments, Inc. - SuperSparc-(II)
fpu             : SuperSparc on-chip FPU
promlib         : Version 3 Revision 2
prom            : 2.14
type            : sun4m

works perfectly well as an afs client... This one:

$ uname -a
Linux prehensile.tonguecraft.com 2.4.17 #2 Tue Feb 19 05:26:36 EST
2002 sparc unknown
$ cat /proc/cpuinfo
cpu             : Fujitsu  MB86904
fpu             : Lsi Logic/Meiko L64804 or compatible
promlib         : Version 3 Revision 2
prom            : 2.15
type            : sun4m

is both a client and a server:
Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda7              5022344     42008   4725208   1% /vicepa
AFS                    9000000         0   9000000   0% /afs

running the 1.2.3final2 debian packages - I should probably upgrade to
1.2.5 now that it is out.

As for the kernel:
-rw-r--r--    1 root     root       876387 Feb 19 06:46 vmlinuz-2.4.17

if you're getting 1003K, *use more modules*. Or just take *out* a lot
of that -- you're building drivers and stuff that you will *never*
plug into that particular Sun.
