[OpenAFS] client klog failures on OSF1 5.1a

we have a compaq alpha machine running OSF1 5.1a that we compiled
open-afs 1.2.9a on.

Everything seems to be working with seeing /afs and the afs filesystem
however klog
generates an error "Unable to authenticate to AFS because password was
incorrect."
regardless of which account you try to log in with.
The password error seems to mask the actual problem since all of the
other machines
in our network do not have a problem logging in to the cell.  Are there
any other things
I can look for that might be causing the problem, such as known issues
with Kerberos
libaries, OS compatibility, etc.?
