Thanks to Derrick I just got the client part working.
The task is like this : I want do deploy AFS in our private homebrew LAN
as replacement for SMB/MS-networks.
There is a Linux box that will act as full featured server, including
celldb and auth services.
Most others, about 20 or so, are either clients, servers or both. Most
of them are windows98 boxes and a few XP boxes.
Most should be able to serve files too, as there is no central storage
space.
Hence the need for server capability on win98.
Upgrade to win2k/xp on these boxes is unlikely (hardware, software, user
ability, drivers, gameplay, ui, etc. those guys that are not versed in
experiments stick to what they do know).
Security model is not much of concern, virii, worms and such not a
significant issue, being a private net. Random scans issued by the linux
box can determine an infection and promptly denies network access to
that box.
Shares are meant to be accessed by everybody.
Also our future cell is meant to be accessible from other LANs to which
we have connections via tunnels. Up to date smb/ms-networks is and has
been a real pain as it's not capable of handling internet specific
issues like delays, timeouts, reconnects, low bandwidth, etc.
I hope there is a way to deploy both client and server components on
our lan with AFS
Thanks.
