More data points:
AIX 5.1 ML7 and 1.3.78.
CC=cc ./configure --enable-transarc-paths --disable-pam --host=rs6000
--with-afs-sysname=rs_aix51
(compiling on a fast chrp machine, testing on an old MCA system, thus
the --host and --with-afs-sysname)
I can start AFS, cd to system:anyuser directories, and see everything
fine. Once, I "klog", though, about only thing that doesn't crash the
system is "tokens". "fs" and "ls" take it down in short order.
A bit of crash dump:

If you want more informatio or if there is anything I can try, let me know.

I can give you compile access on a fast (well, 8 minutes to compile)
production system, and test access on a slower (probably hours to
compile...) one.
I have no real need for server functionality, only client.
