Just noticed that the firewall/router here has a max MTU size of 1520 -set
in hardware-. There is no indication or control over the actual MTU size.
There is a suspicion that packet disassembly/reassembly done at various
stages in the route may be causing some of the weird VPN and other
behaviour.
It would be nice to have an end-to-end exerciser/diagnostic driven from
behind the internal AFS subroutine. That way net connectivity could be
independently verified.

I don't know -- it seems a bit odd that most packets would have the correct
checksum, but a few would not.
