I realize that portability is, these days, not widely espoused ... but 
if you can't make this statement without the word "unix" in it (and not 
substituting any other word for unix), then the statement has _NO_ value 
to me.

I disagree.  The best way to do it is going to be via a WebDAVfs.  SFTP 
is merely going to be the more common way to do it.
