He has a kernel with CONFIG_SMP turned on.
He has 2.6.15-1.2054_FC5, according to uname.
He does not have 2.6.15-1.2054_FC5smp.

That is true. The correct dependency would be one of these:
kernel-i686 = 2.6.15-1.2054_FC5smp
kernel-smp = 2.6.15-1.2054_FC5
Probably the former is needed, but selecting kernel RPM dependencies is a
tricky business, which you've studied more closely than I.
