[OpenAFS] Any real need for separate AFS cache harddisk partition?

Dear all,

What is the use/purpose of a separate (ie separate
disk partition) AFS cache? Some older servers I
inherited have this (100MB), instead of the default
auto-made /var/cache/openafs cahe (seems to be 9GB),
which is
simpler IMHO.

Some googling shows a separate reserved-space afs
cache filesystem is recommended only if you're not
sure that /var or /usr will have enough space.
That must've been from the days when disk space was
scarce.
With giant disks these days, not a problem.

So it is worth it to set up afscache partition?
The default on all our other machines seems fine.
IMHO the less post-OS load tweaks, the better.
