So you expect /afs/rcf/lang/python/sun4x_510/2.6.4 to be RW, right?
Where does it turn RW in that path? Did you alter one of those path
elements to be a mountpoint to a different volume just before the
release, or something like that?

An 'fs getfid /afs/rcf/lang/python/sun4x_510' could help, if run when
the client thinks it is RO.
