usernames do not have to be 8 characters but your unix system of choice
might have an 8 character limit for usernames which will make for a
confusing scenarios for most users if the afs username and the unix
user name do not agree.

i dont know which supported afs systems still have 8 character user
names (irix or hpux might be ones i guess).
