The OpenAFS gatekeepers are pleased to announce that for the second year
in a row OpenAFS has been accepted as a mentoring organization in Google
Summer of Code(TM). OpenAFS believes that one of the most important
ways in which OpenAFS can foster the growth of OpenAFS and the OpenAFS
community is to provide students with the opportunity to work as part of
an open source community on large system software. Google Summer of
Code(TM) is just one of the avenues that OpenAFS pursues. OpenAFS also
supports Capstone Senior Projects and individual undergraduate research
initiatives.

Students that are interested in applying to OpenAFS as a mentoring
organization should review the details at
http://www.openafs.org/gsoc.html and then speak with the community about
potential projects either in the Freenode Internet Relay Chat channel
#openafs or in the OpenAFS community's Jabber conference room,
openafs@conference.openafs.org.

We look forward to introducing OpenAFS to students from all over the
world whether or not they are accepted. In 2008 OpenAFS communicated
with more than 50 students; received applications from 29; and accepted
8. Surprisingly none of the students we spoke with were from
Universities that provide AFS storage as a service. OpenAFS
administrators are encouraged to contact their local computer science
departments in order to encourage student participation. Student
applications are due April 3rd.

Good luck to all participants.
