this is great if you are using glibc.  what is your arent?  i believe
there is an effort underway to make the bsd userland run with the linux
kernel environment.  they would use i386_linux4?  see my other mesg about
this.  perhaps it would be better to move the linux of the s/w half of
the sysname entirely.  redhat isnt linux.  slackware isnt linux.  glibc
isnt linux. linuxppc_glibc21 seems descriptive enough (and wouldnt be
confused with the previous sysname values) although a bit long.

actually the kernel is the most common element about linux.  not the
userspace.
