Next up, now that the mkdir problem has gone away:
I was footling about - downloaded some stuff, and then started doing some
rm's to get rid of files created in previous testing. Something like
rmdir bleem/norp
rmdir bleem
rm foo
and on removing the file, a panic. BT is:
panic
lockmgr
vop_stdlock
vop_defaultop
vn_lock
osi_VM_TryToSmush
afs_TryToSmush
afsremove
afs_remove
afs_cop_remove
kern_unlink
unlink

The message for the panic is:
panic: lockmgr: locking against myself
locks not being released on time? Note that this system has INVARIANTS and
WITNESS and everything, so it may be complaining about more locking
problems than your trypical production server,
