If anyone wants to just go ahead and commit one of the versions of these
patches, please go ahead.  I don't have the free time to do it right
now, unfortunately, and they're all pretty reasonable.

(I know aklog has lots of cruft in it; the first round of work was really
more focused on getting it into the tree and making the autoconf glue
work).
