fprintf(stderr, "DEPRECEATED: THIS OPTION IS DEPRECEATED AND WILL BE 
REMOVED IN A FUTURE RELEASE\n"); ?

But, changing the default to off and adding a (DEPRECEATED) in 
helptext etc. should be enough, really.
