I knew I overlooked something - the RPC definition has plenty of room 
but of course the database did not quite match that one.

Well, a VLDB conversion is of course not rocket science, and then one 
would also reconsider the MAXSERVERID limitation. But that needs 
better motivation than a silly partition-naming convention. Something 
for quieter days.
