If the only reason for keeping this around is to keep the 'sometimes
works' behavior working sometimes, should I take it that making this
behavior runtime configurable is not out of the question? Or are
you/others of the opinion that this should be considered part of the
protocol semantics that should not be changed? i.e., if the AFS
protocol were documented, what would be said wrt this?
