i should copy out the discussion from gerrit:
it specifies a call to getDirPath(); i'd rather have this get fixed by
having (some other patch) override the relevant dirpath entries
instead of expecting every daemon to have the same code to perform
such overrides... and this patch will just work once such a thing is
added, as long as all daemons which honor a -confdir parameter
(currently at least ptserver and vlserver) actually so apply it.
