Indeed. The documentation is really written for people who are AFS
administrators for their site, and makes suggestions for how to set up
both client workstations and the basic structure of the filesystem within
a cell. Most existing cells that are as old as engin.umich.edu have
developed their own way of doing things over the years. You will probably
find that there isn't a simple "make /usr/afsws point to X" sort of
answer, and that you're better off just installing the AFS utilities in
/usr or /usr/local.
In any event, Derek is right -- talk to your local administrators, who
may give you some idea what to do. It may even be the case that they have
a supported way to install and run AFS on your platform.
