What regards firewalling: of course I ensured that no AFS related traffic
was blocked by firewalling rules.

So I first accepted TCP/UDP connections to port 750, 7000-7009, and then
even gave any fine grain access control by accepting ANY traffic from the
client (something you achieve by typing:

ipchains -I input 1 -s client-ip -j ACCEPT

)

Also, thinking that AFS would use portmap, I added portmap authorization
access into inetd.conf, as is usually required for NFS to work.

However, the answer was : drive not 'accessable'.
