I have upgreaded to 1.2.2 (afs server) and it works.
Th machine config is:

2.2.16-3smp
glibc-2.2.4-18.7.0

afs was configured with
./configure --enable-redhat-buildsys --with-afs-sysname=alpha_linux_22
--with-linux-kernel-headers=/usr/src/linux --enable-transarc-paths

I use afs with krb5 with kdc on alpha (same machine).

The /vicepa is ext2 on a loop device.

The only "trouble" is that one fileserver thread is consuming large amount
of CPU. To untar the kernel it takes 65 CPU seconds, all the other threads
use 3 secs. (It was the same with 1.1.1)

Before I try the client, I have to upgrade to journaled fs...

Best regards,

Andrej

BTW: I have also tried cvs from today, but it does not compile...
