This happened to me when I used the OpenAFS instructions on the Gentoo 
Linux site (http://www.gentoo.org).  When I used the official AFS docs, 
I didn't have problem.  The only difference I could find was that the 
official docs had me load the Linux kernel module, where the Gentoo 
guide did not - could that be your problem as well?
