It can be *very* confusing to see different contents of that same file
on different machines. Been there, done that. 

The trick is that the machine on which the file is written reflects
the newly written state whereas the other machines get the state
before the flush()/close(). Dunno for files larger than local AFS
cache; these will be partially transmitted to the server as space in
cache gets tight.
