because dbm is atrocious on collisions, if nothing else.  BSD uses (of
course) Berkeley DB.

Also ncsd *does* cache /etc/passwd file lookups - at least on solaris
and linux - it's caching the call+result, not the data source.

(hesiod and ldap both fill the NIS niche as well.)
