[OpenAFS] AFS, DFS, OpenAFS, what's going on?

Hello,

I'm involved with administrating a network of Windows clients that
currently talk to a Samba server on Linux. We're considering migrating
to AFS or something AFS like.

My problem is that besides www.openafs.org I am unable to find any
up-to-date information on it. So I have a few questions that aren't
OpenAFS specific, but this is the only place I know to ask them...

* What is the status of AFS as a commercial product (supposing we want
the administrative tools that weren't open sourced; such as the backup
tools)? Is it still something that is actively used? IBM has som PR
stuff on it, but I can't even find a price on their site.

* What's the status of DCE/DFS? I understand it's the next-generation
AFS. But the product brouchour on IBM's site is dated 1997...

* Are AFS/DFS old? Assuming you want to stay away from the usual
Windows file sharing solution, which network file system(s) should I
consider? Are AFS/DFS still viable options, or are they being phased
out?

* Are people using OpenAFS in production environments? Is it mature?

Obviously, I have quite a few gaps... I've read quite a bit on the way
AFS/Coda works, and I have half-way set up both OpenAFS and Coda before,
but as for the status of the actual AFS software and such, I haven't
got a clue.

Any pointers, even if it's just "RTFM <url>", would be appreciated.
