[OpenAFS] bug in OpenAFS client regarding empty backup volumes..?

I'm having an issue with backup volumes disappearing on both the Linux and
IRIX OpenAFS 1.2.2a client.

The problem can be reproduced by, for example:

1) user: "fs mkm Backup usr.username.backup"
2) admin: "vos backupsys"
3) user: "cd Backup"

now user will see "connection timed out". The client gets into a state
where no matter what you do, you can't get it to recognize the new backup
volume until you restart the client (or in the case of Linux... the box
itself)

note that before 1) ... "vos backupsys" hadn't been run yet, so there was
nothing in the user's backup volume.

Another way to get into this state is to move a user's volume (which then
deletes his old backup volume) and ls Backup before a new vos backup is
performed.

Tried all of the fs flush commands but nothing helped. Other clients who
access the backup volume *after* it has been populated work fine.

This looks like a bug in the OpenAFS client code... ?

Thanks
