[OpenAFS] Is PAM necessary

Sorry, I'm new to OpenAFS and the whole authentification business.

I've just built a new Linux system (Linux-From-Scratch) and upto now
I have the standard login and ssh (3.1) running.
Next I am going to install OpenAFS.
We are a small department here so I really want a simple solution.
Do I have to install PAM support into my Linux system?
