[OpenAFS] help, "Stale NFS file handle"

i'm using openafs (v 1.2.2) on a linux machine with a recent 2.4 
kernel. i've gone through the docs to get things up and running 
twice now, but have run into the same problem.

# mount
<...snip...>
AFS on /afs type afs (rw)

# ls -la /afs
ls: /afs/.: Stale NFS file handle
total 8
drwxr-xr-x   19 root	root	4096 May 20 14:24 ..
drwxrwxrwx    2	root	root	2048 May 20 18:50 smstest
drwxrwxrwx    2 root	root	2048 May 20 18:50 test

# cd /afs

# ls
ls: .:Stale NFS file handle


i'm not sure what to do here? it seems things are getting a bit 
confused, but i'm not sure what i've got wrong so far. i'm guessing 
it may have something to do with my kernel compile options.

hopefully this is enough information for someone to help. i've 
searched the faq and this wasn't in there. i can send more detailed 
information if needed. thanks
