This might be a lead in the problem.  We're looking into it now.  The
referenced bug is in NFS space.  The major link between NFS (ID=108092)
and the problems we're seeing with our AFS module is in the second bug 
report (ID=91566).

described in blocking bug #87659. Briefly, gcc-2.96-113 produces
kernels with this flaw. A workaround is to rebuild the kernel with

Folks have seen the same thing that we've seen on the tahoe nodes over a 
broad range of 2.4.18 and 2.4.20 kernels built with gcc 2.96-113.  One guy 
reports it still crashing even though he compiled with 2.96-112...
