I did a quick measuring on an Athlon 1G:

 copying from Partition A to Partition B: 13.2 MB/s
 copying from AFS (Volume resides on Partition A) to Partition B: 11.0 MB/s

-> AFS: -17%

With an older CPU, it would be a bit worse. On one of my ancient fileservers,
AFS eats 45%.
