I've moved around ~30G volumes with no problems.  If I had the space, I'd 
try moving the bigger vols.

As for backups -- well, we do a 'vos backupsys' so backup clones of
the bigger vols are created. I've never tried doing a restore from
one.  I think I shall give this a spin.
