[OpenAFS] Transarc path vs default path

I have previously successfully brought up my own
cell using --enable-transarc-paths, and the
documentation provided by IBM.

With my latest machine, I decided to configure it
as a client, but compiling with default paths
(per option in the README.) Now, of course, the
client won't start up because the afs.rc.linux
script is still looking for stuff in the Transarc
paths.

So, before I go on trying to resolve all the file
location issues, what direction is OpenAFS going
with directories: will the Transarc paths
eventually be deprecated in favor of the default
paths, or is the preference still for Transarc
paths and the default path is showing up in the
Makefile as a side effect of configure? If the
former, are there any documentation for wrestling
the default paths to installation submission?

TIA
