Bug in the fs layer of linux kernel < 2.4.20, looked like it was
independent of load and filesystem. Rebooting made it work for a day or
longer.
I upgraded to kernel 2.4.20-ac2 and all has worked very well since (no
downtime at all).
I should probably mail the list... You're not the first one to ask.
