[OpenAFS] problem with openafs on a recompiled 2.4.20-8 kernel

as soon as you TOUCH the configuration IN ANY WAY...... The version
symbols are NO LONGER VALID!  Red Hat distributes a bunch of pre-built
version symbol tables for use when rebuilding the kernel -- but it
only works when using the distributed configuration.  IF YOU CHANGE
THE CONFIGURATION, YOU ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVITELY MUST REMOVE THE
DISTRIBUTED VERSION SYMBOL TABLES FROM THE KERNEL SOURCE TREE BEFORE
YOU RECOMPILE YOUR KERNEL.  If you do not do so, you will have version
symbol problems in all your modules.

I do not know how to make this more clear...
