Sorry, should've been smarter than that:
I read through the supplied redhatish rc file and did my best to make
everything happy. I now get this:

Starting AFS services.....
afsd: some file missing or bad in /usr/local/etc/openafs

which looks like this:

root@mi:/usr/local/etc/openafs# ls -lt
total 28
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 32 May 11 22:59 cacheinfo
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 25 May 11 22:24 CellServDB
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 May 11 18:20 modload
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 11 May 6 15:47 CellServDB.new
-rw------- 1 root root 0 Jan 27 14:19 AFSLog
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 11328 Jan 24 15:19 CellServDB.debian

So um, any of this look missing or bad?
