I have similar problems with the most recent kernels supplied
by SuSE for SuSE 8.1. The ptrace fixed kernels they supplied are
the last that work for us:
k_athlon-2.4.19-263.i586.rpm
k_deflt-2.4.19-274.i586.rpm
k_smp-2.4.19-257.i586.rpm

SuSE 8.1 has gcc 3.1. We compiled openafs-1.2.8 and 9 with this
succesfull, but only for the older kernel revisions.
