No, it's LFS (LinuxFromScratch, kernel 2.4.24, gcc-3.3.3 (cvs))
Here an excerpt from my /etc/hosts
27.0.0.1	localhost

134.130.161.253	numa-sv numa-sv.igpm.rwth-aachen.de

/usr/afs/etc/CellServDB = /usr/vice/etc/CellServDB

>igpm.rwth-aachen.de	#Cell name
134.130.161.253 #numa-sv

/usr/afs/etc/ThisCell = /usr/vice/etc/ThisCell
igpm.rwth-aachen.de

After a completely new install,
just having copied /usr/afs/db/* and /usr/afs/etc/*
from the old root (running afs) to the new root partition

I did

insmod /usr/vice/etc/modload/libafs-2.4.24.mp.o
/usr/afs/bin/bosserver
/usr/vice/etc/afsd -stat 2800 -dcache 2400 -daemons 5 -volumes 128 -verbose

the last lines of output are

afsd: All AFS daemons started.
afsd: Forking trunc-cache daemon.
afsd: Mounting the AFS root on '/afs', flags: 0.
SScall(137, 28, 3)=0 afsd: Can't mount AFS on /afs(22)
and
Lost contact with volume location server ....

I'm next to completely desparate.

To add,
ping localhost
ping numa-sv.igpm.rwth-aachen.de
both work fine

Many thanks for any help,
