Well, that's certainly a good reason for it not to answer.

So, does /etc/hosts list
127.0.0.1 sggs.homenetwork.edu
?

If so, that's wrong. If not, tell us what's returned when you run
hostname
and when you run
grep `hostname` /etc/hosts
