OpenAFS needs a Kerberos authentication (either kaserver or KRB-V)
OpenAFS needs a protection database. There is a ldap-replacement for the
built in ptserver.

The operating system needs information about a user, which are not in
the kerberos database or the protection database. This information can
be made available via a distribution system for /etc/passwd (e.g.
cfengine), ldap, YP/NIS or hesiod. (to name the most popular).
