[OpenAFS] Failed to load AFS client, not starting AFS services.

Hi All
I have compiled openafs-1.4.0 on suse 9 / x86 with configuration as below with the following steps
# cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.6.5-7.97-smp (geeko@buildhost) (gcc version 3.3.3 (SuSE Linux)) #1 SMP Fri Jul 2 14:21:59 UTC 2004
# tar xvf openafs-1.4.0-src.tar
# cd openafs-1.4
# cp /boot/symvers-2.6.5-7.97-i386-smp.gz /usr/src/linux/Module.symvers.gz
# cd /usr/src/linux
# gunzip Module.symvers.gz
# make modules_prepare
# ./configure --enable-largefile-fileserver --enable-namei-fileserver --enable-supergroups --enable-fast-restart --enable-transarc-paths --with-linux-kernel-headers=/usr/src/linux-2.6.5-7.97 --with-afs-sysname=i386_linux26 --sysconfdir=/etc --prefix=/opt/openafs --exec-prefix=/opt/openafs
#zcat /proc/config.gz > .config
# make menuconfig
# make dep
# make
# make install
# cd /usr/vice/etc/
# ls
libafs-2.6.5-7.97-smp.mp.ko
# insmod libafs-2.6.5-7.97-smp.mp.ko
# lsmod | grep afs
libafs 561728 0
but when I start the startup script I get the following error :
[....openafs-1.4.0/src/afsd ] # sh afs.rc.linux start
Failed to load AFS client, not starting AFS services.
Can any one please guide me
