Thomas Mueller of Chemnitz University of Technology developed a so called
Chemnitz AFS Backup Suite.

Unfortunately the doc is in german only:

http://www-user.tu-chemnitz.de/~thm/ws03/AFSChemnitzAfsBackupSuite.html

The basic idea is to have 2 servers with 3 Raids clustered together.

First server is the primary RW-Server. At this machine a RO-Clone and
.backup are created. The Volume has a second site on the second Server.

This RO-Copy is dumped into a File on the second Raid of the second Server.

There is an extension to AFS which switches RO volumes to RW in case of a
failure of the first Server.

I am not sure, if you want to have that many servers and raids, but I think
this solutions scales very well.
