We don't try to use samba-afs we just use samba w /pam  by itself. We 
use pam module (pam_afs.so.1) for authenticating.
The next problem for us was providing path info with uid  to user dirs. 
We do this using ldap. Our gateway servers basically think that they are 
running with an enormous passwd file and authing to the afs database.
