    Assuming you're on a recentish Linux kernel then you could try using 
the alternative OOM killer which lets you specifiy tell (a?) "prefered" 
process(es?) to be killed.  IIRC, the normal OOM killer just kills the 
process that caused the out of memory error, which is far from ideal in 
many cases.

    Would be nice if there was one that let you do a negated selection, 
ie "whatever you do, don't kill this".
