I would not recommend this.  If the controller and hard drive are DMA 
capable, IDE DMA is enabled in the kernel, and it is still not using DMA 
there might be a compatibility problem between the controller and disk.  
Look in your dmesg output for a line with "blacklist" or something similar.

Getting a PCI IDE card is probably your best bet.
