As far as I know, they work together with no prob.
Running different versions should not create any problems.
Thats what I've read out of the ML here all the time.
Me for my part have only tested one 1.2.13 client with some 1.3.8[3-7]
clients and server. And there was NO problem.
But you can test one server first, after this with no error the next
one. At least you've got three database server.

And don't forget: the new version was designed to be compatible with old
versions, but integrate more/new features.
